A wagering requirement is the number of times you have to bet a bonus (and sometimes your deposit as well) before the casino lets you withdraw it as cash. It is the single term that decides what a welcome bonus is really worth, because a R1,000 bonus with a light requirement can be far more useful than a R5,000 bonus with a heavy one. This guide explains how to work the number out in Rand, how the house edge quietly eats into it, and what else to check in the terms, using welcome offers we checked on South African casinos' own sites as real-world examples.

What a wagering requirement means
When a casino adds bonus money to your account, that balance is locked until you have placed a set total of bets, and the requirement is written as a multiple such as 10x, 30x or 50x. Our Bonuses page puts it simply: "a 30x requirement on a R100 bonus means you need to place bets totaling R3,000", and those bets can be many small spins rather than a few big ones, since it is the total amount staked that counts.
The basic formula behind every requirement is a single line of arithmetic:
Total bets needed = amount the requirement applies to × wagering multiple
The tricky part is the first term in that formula, because some casinos apply the multiple to the bonus only while others apply it to the deposit plus the bonus, which can make the same headline offer much harder to clear, so it is worth finding that line in the terms before anything else.

Bonus only, or deposit plus bonus?
Here is how much that one detail matters, using a R100 deposit with a 100% match (so a R100 bonus) at 30x:
If the requirement applies to the bonus only, the working is R100 × 30, so you need R3,000 in total bets.
If it applies to the deposit plus the bonus, the working is (R100 + R100) × 30, so you need R6,000 in total bets.
The headline offer is identical in both cases, yet the second version asks you to bet twice as much, which is why you should look for it in the casino's own terms. Of the casinos covered below, Play Live's general terms work it out on the deposit plus the bonus, with the note that this "may differ per promotion", while YesPlay's help centre, Betway's general casino bonus terms and Mzansibet's welcome terms apply the multiple to the bonus only.
Why the house edge matters while you are wagering
Every bet you place while clearing a bonus runs at the game's normal house edge, which is 100% minus the RTP. Over a large number of spins, a 96% RTP slot is designed to keep about R4 of every R100 staked, so you can estimate the theoretical cost of clearing a bonus by multiplying the total bets by the house edge.
That figure is a long-run average and not a prediction, because one session could leave you with a big win or with nothing at all, but it is the clearest way to compare offers. When the theoretical cost comes out close to or above the bonus itself, the bonus is mainly buying you extra playing time rather than extra value. It also means the RTP of the game you play through the wagering on makes a real difference, which is why we show the provider's headline RTP on every slot review, for example 96.21% on Book of Dead and the 96.08% NetEnt lists for Starburst.
Real South African offers, worked through in Rand
The list below takes a R100 first deposit at each casino, uses the basis each casino's own terms give (bonus only, or deposit plus bonus) and assumes you play a 96% RTP slot. Every offer term comes from the casino's own promotions page or terms, re-checked on 4 November 2026.
Play Live offers a 250% welcome match with a R10,000 maximum deposit, and its wagering is 50x the deposit plus the bonus, so a R100 deposit brings a R250 bonus that needs R17,500 in total bets ((R100 + R250) × 50), at a theoretical cost of about R700 at a 4% house edge.
YesPlay offers a 100% match up to R3,000 on a first deposit of at least R20 made within 7 days of registering, and its help centre says the bonus amount must be wagered 8 times within 7 days of accepting the offer, so a R100 deposit brings a R100 bonus that needs R800 in total bets, at a theoretical cost of about R32 at a 4% house edge, although the same help centre gives an example in which slots count for only 3% of each bet, so check how your chosen game contributes before you rely on that figure.
EasyBet offers a 150% casino bonus up to R5,000, which is credited after you bet 15x your first deposit on slots. You bet 15x the deposit to unlock it and then 1x the bonus, so a R100 deposit brings a R150 bonus that needs R1,650 in total bets (R1,500 plus R150), at a theoretical cost of about R66 at a 4% house edge.
Outside our four featured casinos, Mzansibet offers 100% up to R5,000 and 100 bonus spins with the code WELCOME1 and a minimum deposit of R50. Its wagering is 40x the bonus, with the bonus active for 7 days, so a R100 deposit brings a R100 bonus that needs R4,000 in total bets, at a theoretical cost of about R160 at a 4% house edge.
All costs are simple arithmetic from each casino's stated multiple and an illustrative 96% RTP. They are not predictions of any player's result, and the real figures change if the game you play has a different RTP or counts for less than 100% of each bet.
Betway is not in the list because we could not find the terms of its casino welcome offer on its own pages, so the 10x figure we quote for Betway comes from its general casino bonus terms rather than from a welcome-offer page. Those general terms set 10x on the bonus within 30 days and give their own example, where a R100 Games Bonus needs R1,000 in bets, which works out at about R40 of theoretical cost on a 96% RTP slot.
These figures show why the multiple and its basis matter more than the headline figure. YesPlay's 8x on the bonus asks for only R800 in bets on a R100 bonus where slots count in full, Mzansibet's 40x on the bonus alone already asks for R4,000, and EasyBet's casino match is built differently, because the work sits in the 15x deposit rollover before the bonus is paid and the bonus itself then needs only one play-through. A large match with a high multiple on the deposit plus the bonus, like Play Live's 250% at 50x, gives you far more money to play with but asks for many more bets, about R17,500 on a R100 deposit, before any of it turns into cash. Play Live's page also shows a "10x MaxCap" on this offer, which its terms do not define, so it is worth asking its live chat whether the cap is worked out on the deposit or the bonus before you claim.

Where Play Live fits for different players
Play Live is a good example of why "best bonus" depends on how you play. Its 250% welcome match is one of the largest percentages we have seen, which suits players who want a much bigger balance to explore its slots, although its terms keep bonus play on slot games until the wagering is complete. Its promotions page also lists a 10% weekly cashback on net losses that it describes as wager-free, alongside 100 free welcome spins on Wild Bandito with a first deposit of R100 or more, at 40x and R1 a spin. A cashback with no playthrough is about as simple as bonus terms get, because what comes back is not locked behind a multiple, although Play Live's terms limit the cashback to players who deposited R1,000 or more in the previous week and cap what you can withdraw from it at 15 times the cashback amount.
Other terms that change the value of a bonus
Game contribution. Not every game counts fully towards wagering. Mzansibet's welcome terms count eligible slots at 100%, roulette at 25% and card games at 10%, while Betway's casino bonus terms count slots at 100%, blackjack at 10% and roulette at only 2%, so R100 bet on roulette at Betway clears just R2 of the requirement.
Maximum bet. Many bonuses limit your stake while the bonus is active, and breaking that rule can cost you the bonus. Mzansibet caps bets at R100 while a bonus is being wagered, Betway treats single bets of 15% or more of the bonus value as irregular play, and Play Live does the same for bets of 30% or more of the bonus value.
Time limit. The requirement has to be met within a set window, which is 30 days under Betway's general casino bonus terms and 7 days on Mzansibet's welcome bonus. Play Live's promotions page lists 24 hours after your last deposit for its welcome offers, so check Play Live's current terms before you claim.
Withdrawing early. Mzansibet lets you withdraw your deposit before you finish wagering, in which case the bonus and its winnings are void, while Betway says that withdrawing any of the qualifying deposit before the bonus is paid forfeits the bonus, and Play Live's terms say bonus amounts are removed from your balance when you withdraw.
Winnings caps. Some offers cap what you can win or withdraw from the bonus, which mainly matters if you land a big win. Mzansibet caps winnings from its deposit bonus at R100,000, and Play Live's terms limit withdrawals on bonuses worth 25% or more of the deposit to 5 times the deposit unless the promotion states otherwise.
Small free sign-up offers follow the same rules on a smaller scale, as our guide to R50 sign-up bonuses and free spins shows with the R25, R50 and R100 offers we could verify. Once you have the multiple, the basis and the game contribution, you can drop them into the calculator on our Bonuses page to see the total bets for your own deposit. When you are ready to cash out, our withdrawal methods page covers the payout options South African casinos use.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good wagering requirement? There is no official benchmark, but on the welcome offers we checked the multiples run from 8x on the bonus at YesPlay and 10x on the bonus in Betway's general casino bonus terms to 50x on the deposit plus bonus at Play Live, with EasyBet's casino match using a different structure of 15x on the deposit followed by 1x on the bonus. A lower number means fewer bets before you can withdraw, so a requirement of 10x or less on the bonus alone is light, and anything from 30x up asks for a lot of play relative to the bonus.
Do free spins have wagering requirements too? Usually yes, and they are normally applied to what the spins win rather than to the spins themselves, as with the 40x wagering Play Live lists on its welcome spins.
Can I withdraw my deposit before finishing the wagering? It depends on the casino, so check the terms before you claim. Mzansibet's terms let you withdraw your deposit before finishing the wagering, with the bonus and any winnings from it made void, while Play Live's terms say bonus amounts are removed from your balance when you withdraw and that every deposit has to be wagered at least once before a withdrawal.
Does betting bigger clear wagering faster? It reaches the total in fewer spins, but the total amount you need to stake is the same, and bigger bets can break a maximum-bet rule and drain your balance faster, so smaller steady stakes are usually the safer approach, which is the same bankroll thinking behind our Aviator tips for 2026.
Play responsibly
A bonus is extra playing time, not free money, so set your boundaries before you claim one:
Set a deposit limit and a time limit in your account before your first bet, and keep to them even when a bonus balance makes the session feel cheaper.
Never deposit more than you planned just to qualify for a bigger match, because a larger bonus also means a larger amount to wager.
Do not chase a bonus that is shrinking during wagering, since letting it go is often cheaper than topping up to save it.
